I speak from experience as my father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He was on several monthly maintenance medications already, and adding weekly chemo treatments and many, many appointments was not something that he was able to afford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not being able to afford medical care or medication has a major impact on at least 22% of the patient population. Patients know that whatever the diagnosis, they may not be able to afford the cost of care, or even the prescribed medications. This usually hinders their ability to get a diagnosis and begin treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My experience in the pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years was a blessing. I knew there were programs out there that may be able to assist him during this difficult time. Most patients are not aware of affordability programs that may be able to help them with the cost of their medications. He was fortunate enough to have been approved into a Patient Assistance program (PAP) and a copay assistance card which helped to alleviate some of the financial burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>UBC offers affordability programs aimed at helping patients overcome their financial hurdles.
