{"id":4707,"date":"2020-02-04T16:59:46","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/live-ubc-llc.pantheonsite.io\/?p=645"},"modified":"2025-05-15T19:24:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T19:24:11","slug":"future-rems-technology-reduce-burden-and-improve-safety","status":"publish","type":"insights","link":"https:\/\/ubc.com\/insights\/future-rems-technology-reduce-burden-and-improve-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Future REMS Technology: Reduce Burden and Improve Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-date text-muted\"><span style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert; font-weight: revert;\">During the 12th REMS Summit in Virginia, UBC presented a session on the UBC\u2019s <\/span><strong style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert;\">Natalie O\u2019Donnell<\/strong><span style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert; font-weight: revert;\">, Corporate Vice President, Safety, REMS, and Strategic Engagement and <\/span><strong style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert;\">Justin Wilson<\/strong><span style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert; font-weight: revert;\">, Director, Software Development and Technology, presented a session on the impact technology has had on REMS and the potential effect it can have in the future.\u00a0They discussed how technology has become transformative, reducing patient and health care professional burden and improving compliance with REMS requirements.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-content ql-snow\">\n<div class=\"ql-editor\">\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">The presentation included an overview of key drivers in future <a href=\"\/solution\/safety-risk-management\/risk-evaluation-mitigation-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">REMS <\/a>technology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cloud Computing<\/strong> \u2013 Offers incredible computing power and scalability, on-demand support, and the ability to handle intensive workloads without any upfront investments<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Network Effect<\/strong> \u2013 Utilizes<a href=\"\/solution\/evidence-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> real world data<\/a> (RWD) that already exist &#8211; critical to program \u00a0efficiency (cost\/time)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation<\/strong> \u2013 Offers ongoing interpretations of data for developing insights and evidence generation<\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-align-justify\"><strong>Intelligent Interfaces (IoT)<\/strong> \u2013 Provides ongoing patient communication with new ways of engagement such as virtual assistants, creating new data sets for better analysis of the engagements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">With the emphasis on reducing stakeholder burden and minimizing barriers to access, innovations in REMS technology are ever more important. Three examples of technological innovation that impact REMS are <strong>automated<\/strong> <strong>AE reporting, the use of RWD and RWE, and virtual assistants.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\"><strong>Automated AE Reporting <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">According to the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), there were more than 2.1 million unique patient reports submitted to FAERS in 2018. Of those, 9.1% or 196,807 resulted in patient deaths, while 60% of the events were categorized as \u201cserious\u201d.<sup>1<\/sup> Numbers of adverse event reports submitted to the FDA \u00a0continue to rise; when comparing the last four reported years (2015 \u2013 2018) in FAERS to the previous four years (2014-2011), there has been an 85% increase in numbers of AE reports. Therefore, it is imperative that accurate\/efficient reporting systems are in place for any REMS to ensure patient safety. Current challenges, however, exist related to current AE reporting tools, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ql-align-justify\">Fractured data entry environment<\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-align-justify\">Double data entry with multiple systems<\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-align-justify\">Inefficient use of fax and e-mail to submit reports<\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-align-justify\">Unique reporting requirements for each REMS Sponsor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">One solution is implementing an automated adverse event reporting platform, like UBC\u2019s eREF (electronic reportable event form) platform.\u00a0This allows sponsors and vendors to collect more detailed information on a greater number of cases and transmit data in a more consistent and reliable manner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\"><strong>Real World Data (RWD) and Real World Evidence (RWE) and Their Applications in REMS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">A massive ecosystem of diverse data has been accumulating from sources like electronic medical records (EMRs), claims databases, health surveys, patient registries, and mobile devices that form RWD.\u00a0These data sources can now be brought together to provide valuable insights that previously could not be observed.\u00a0Up until now, linking these data has been a very laborious and ineffective task.\u00a0UBC is using a unique HIPAA\/GDPR\/CCPA \u2013 compliant next-gen technology to link these data sets using a tokenization engine to link patient data throughout the healthcare landscape.\u00a0Enriching the REMS data with the RWD has allowed UBC to provide actionable insights that allow UBC and the manufacturer to make proactive decisions to help reduce REMS participant burden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\"><strong>Virtual Assistants <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">Traditionally, REMS stakeholders are engaged by communications from a call center, email, website, app, and written documents. However, patients and providers are becoming less likely to respond to calls and emails due to increases in spamming and apps losing their appeal, so these communication strategies are falling short. Fortunately, virtual assistants offer a solution. Stakeholders are able to converse with a virtual assistant through text and\/or voice as if they are speaking with a real person.
